Star Trek: The Next Generation asked the question “Will Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher ever get together” and Star Trek: Picard answered it.

There is just about no bigger “will they/won’t they” in Star Trek history than the romantic subplot between Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher. Almost. Kathryn Janeway and Chakotay will always remain supreme but Picard and Crusher were a close second.

It was one of The Next Generation’s biggest lingering questions, and for good reasons. It was one of the biggest and most important relationships involving the biggest and most important character in the series history.

Now, Picard will set to solve that question. Speaking to EW, Picard showrunner Terry Matalas spoke about the reason to finally explore that romantic subplot;

"“It feels like, ‘Why didn’t they for decades?’ …It felt like it should have gone there in a feature film. Now that you’re here at the end, wouldn’t it be great to see, ‘Oh, they went there alright.’”"

Star Trek: Picard’s exploration may uncover unintended results

Star Trek: Picard has a lot of questions beyond the “will they/won’t they” of it all, and one of those involves both characters. Picard and Crusher will seemingly have their relationship revealed in the confines of the show, but is a long-standing rumor that they have a son going to be finally confirmed?

Mirroring Wrath of Khan in so many ways, the show seems deadset on revealing that Picard has a long-lost relative of some sort, someone to carry on his legacy, something that’s utterly important to him as explored in Star Trek Generations.

In that film, Picard finds out very early into the story that his brother and nephew both died in a fire. This caused some issues throughout the film for Picard to deal with. Finally finding out there’s another Picard seems like the resolution to not only his romance with Crusher but the storyline of his own legacy being passed down.
