Star Trek: Picard actors, Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes, discuss the ending of the Star Trek: The Next Generation movies.

It’s no surprise that Star Trek: Nemesis was a commercial failure, and that failure led the cancellation of additional movies starring The Next Generation cast. Another movie was already in the draft stages, according to Patrick Stewart who, along with Jonathan Frakes, discussed how things ended in an interview with Yahoo.

Frakes said that Nemesis was the first Star Trek movie to lose money which led to Paramount cutting their losses. After that, Paramount was done with Star Trek: The Next Generation. He admitted, though, that he never really thought it was going to be the end until Paramount said “you’re done.”

Stewart felt the same way and thought Nemesis was a disappointment to the entire cast.

"It was not of the quality of what had gone before with the three previous movies, particularly the one that Jonathan had directed, First Contact, which was absolutely brilliant. They had already a draft of a movie project, which would follow Nemesis, but we just got kind of brutally axed."

Star Trek: Picard will give the actors the opportunity to close out these characters and have a proper goodbye.

Star Trek: Nemesis was a horrible way to end fifteen years of adventures with The Next Generation cast, and until now, they have not reunited. But season three of Picard, which premieres February 16, will rectify that.

Stewart said the discussions about the reunion started during the first season of PIcard, and he was initially hesitant about it. But after going through a series of storylines and ideas about reuniting, the right one finally came together.

With the cast all in agreement that Nemesis was a disappointment, they must have been in agreement that season three of Picard was going to give them a chance to say goodbye to the fans the way they’ve always wanted. And that’s why we have ten episodes of this cast together again. While some fans might be hesitant about this reunion, given that it isn’t being led by the showrunners of Star Trek: The Next Generation, I think we should trust the cast enough to know what is a good way for their characters to finally exit stage left…if that is actually what happens.
