Is Star Trek: Picard doing Wesley Crusher a disservice?

Wesley Crusher will not be appearing in the third season of Star Trek: Picard.

As of right now, there’s no indication that Wil Wheaton will be returning as Wesley Crusher in the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard. But with the introduction of Jack Crusher as his brother, one has to wonder, like this Screenrant writer, if the series is doing Wesley a disservice by not making him part of this new family dynamic.

Though Wesley is now a Traveler and not “of this plane,” he is still Dr. Beverly Crusher’s son, which brings up a lot of questions. Does he stay in touch with his mother? Does he know about his brother? Does he know Admiral Jean-Luc PIcard is Jack’s father? How does he feel about that? Since he’s a Traveler, he may be above these types of concerns, but he idolized Picard. Having a half-brother whose father is Picard would undoubtedly cause some issues for Wesley were he to appear on the series.

Wil Wheaton has said Wesley Crusher will not appear in season three of Star Trek: Picard.

But then, he wasn’t supposed to show up in Picard at all. Yet, he popped up in the final episode of the second season, surprising fans with a brief, but welcome cameo. So it very well could be that his presence is being kept under wraps as showrunner Terry Matlas has mentioned there will be other cameos and other Star Trek: The Next Generation characters appearing in the series.

Quite frankly, I think Wesley should be one of them, even if it’s just for a brief scene. He and his mother could communicate via view screen, or he could have a conversation with his brother or, better yet, Admiral Picard. It just seems right to include Wesley now that he has a brother.

What do you think? Should Wesley return to Star Trek: Picard?
