This post contains spoilers from Star Trek: Picard season three, episode 2 “Disengage” with Ed Speleers.

Star Trek :Picard broke new ground with last week’s episode by revealing that Ed Speleers’ character, Jack Crusher, is not only Dr. Beverly Crusher’s (Gates McFadden) son but Admiral Jean-Luc Picard’s (Patrick Stewart) as well. This brings an entirely new character into the franchise so, unsurprisingly, CinemaBlend asked Speleers if there have been conversations about where this story could take Jack.

Speleers, who said he’d give a lot to keep playing this part, said there had been conversations with showrunner and executive producer Terry Matalas about where Jack’s future will lead.

"“He’s got a lot of ideas about it. I’m not gonna lie because I’m proud of the fact that Terry and I discussed this almost every day for the last eighteen months what could happen.”"

A spin-off with Ed Speleers might not be a welcome show idea for Star Trek: Picard fans…at least not without paying attention to current characters.

While this introduction to Jack could be seen as a origin story, like Speleers said, we haven’t had the fully fleshed out origin stories of Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd). We don’t know where the current season of Picard will leave Seven of Nine, and we’re still wondering about Soji (Isa Briones) who was jettisoned before the third season began.

I can see Jack Crusher appearing in a spin-off if it’s not based solely on his character. Have him join the spin-off with Seven of Nine and Raffi or Section 31 or any other spin-offs with Worf or other characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation. But putting him front and center might not sit well with fans who’ve been following Picard’s (and others’) journey for three years.

Speleers added that there were more stories to be told [about his character], but there are just as many to be told about the current line-up of characters, some of whom we’ll probably never see again. So before Paramount jumps into a brand new spin-off series with a brand new character, I hope it considers how that might leave some of the other characters behind.

Is Star Trek: Picard doing Wesley Crusher a disservice?. dark. Next
