Star Trek: Strange New Worlds should bring in Montgomery Scott to serve as Uhura’s new mentor

One of the best, but least explored parts of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was the unlikely friendship that developed between Nyota Uhura and Hemmer, the chief of engineering for the Enterprise. While Hemmer was more of a mentor for Uhura, encouraging and teaching her at various points throughout the first season, they didn’t share as much screen time as one would hope.

Their connection was a treat and it made fans want to see more. That desire turned into torment when Hemmer was killed off in the penultimate episode of the first season, a decision that made Uhura question her place in Starfleet.

Uhura will obviously return, as Cecilia Rose Gooding was a fan favorite and the fandom lauded her portrayal of the iconic Uhura. So why not bring her back a bit more bitter, and partner her up with a brand new mentor? How about a thick-accented Scottish man?

Montgomery “Scotty” Scott is the perfect person to pair with Uhura in season two

Hemmer and Uhura were great together, but we think Scotty could be just as good, if not a better pairing for Uhura. Uhura is coming off of a dark arc, where she lost someone she was close to, and is reevaluating what she wants. Pairing her with the jovial Scotsman could force Uhura to deal with some emotional uneasiness and maybe, just maybe, give her a more joyous counterpart to play off of.

Of course, the reason why Hemmer worked so well is that the man who brought him to life, Bruce Horak, was so easy to like. The chemistry that he and Gooding had was inspired, so you have to make sure that if you do bring in Scotty and pair him with Uhura, whoever you get has just as much chemistry with her as Horak did.
