Alex Kurtzman drops hints about what we can expect from Star Trek coming up.
With Star Trek: Picard wrapping up its final season in just three episodes, and Star Trek: Discovery ending after five seasons, things are getting a little light on the Star Trek front. But Alex Kurtzman revealed in an interview with SFX Magazine [via Trekmovie] that essentially we shouldn’t worry about a dry spell for the franchise.
First, Kurtzman confirmed yet again that Picard was always planned to run for only three seasons so it wasn’t cancelled as some fans seem to think. The only Star Trek series to be cancelled since Star Trek: Enterprise is Discovery, and perhaps five years is the plan for any series going forward. We don’t know, but what we do know, thanks to Kurtzman, is that major announcements regarding the franchise are coming soon. With April 5 being First Contact Day, it won’t be a surprise if that’s when we’ll hear what’s around the corner.
It sounds like Alex Kurtzman has more mini-series or event series planned than regular series.
This comes as a bit of a surprise that the franchise might be heading in an altogether different direction than the one we’ve been used to.
"“By the way, even individual characters – I think we could absolutely continue to tell stories about individual characters that are set up on the show in other contexts. That’s the beauty of having a universe now is that, in a perfect world, we’re not just doing seasons of television, we’re doing event series, we’re doing single events that could be two, three hours long. I think that we are now at a place where that’s really possible.”"
Though SFX Magazine pushed for a little more information about what fans could expect, especially in the way of regular series like Star Trek: Janeway, the head of Paramount+ wasn’t forthcoming, even though has previously said that is a project he would love to do.
"“[W]e have plans for new things… there’s quite a few plans, and you’ll hear about them soon. We will continue to expand the Star Trek universe, absolutely.”"
And he offered one more unsurprising confirmation regarding Section 31.
"“I can tell you that we’re still very excited about Section 31. And that’s all I will say.”"
We’ll file that one under a “remains to be seen” label and wait for April 5th to see if that’s the date Alex Kurtzman will drop these major announcements.
