First Contact Day: 3 best first contacts made in Star Trek history
By Chad Porto
What are three of the better First Contacts made in Star Trek history?
Star Trek: First Contact remains one of the best Trek films in history. It tells the story of humanity’s first acknowledged contact with an alien race, in this case, the Vulcans. The film does a great job of depicting a pre-warp civilization on Earth and nails the exact moment that humanity could breathe again after decades of war and poverty.
It was the single most important moment in Starfleet’s eventual history, as it started the Alpha Quadrant on a path of unity and diplomacy. It was easily one of the best first contacts that humanity and Starfleet ever had.
What are some others as well? That’s what we’re going to be talking about today, since today is First Contact Day, or when the Vulcans landed on Earth in the film. So it’s a fitting time to look at such a topic.
What are three of the best First Contacts that the Federation made?
The Vulcans
Obviously, we’re going with the Vulcans as without them the Federation would never exist. The partnership Earth made with the Vulcans was the single-most monumental decision either group made, as they both became pillars of the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet going forward. Who knows what an Alpha Quadrant devoid of a partnership would’ve looked like?
The Andorians
The first contact between the Andorians and the soon-to-be Federation happened early under the command of Jonathan Archer aboard the Enterprise NX-01. The Andorians raided a Vulcan temple called P’Jem with the belief that it was actually hiding a Vulcan monitoring post, set up to spy on the Andorians. Archer and the Andorian leader Shran forged an uneasy alliance after discovering the Andorians were right and while it would impact the Vulcan and Earth alliance somewhat, the three powers would become the biggest players in launching the United Federation of planets.
The Klingons
The first official encounter with a Klingon came prior to the launch of the NX-01 Enterprise and saw a Klingon named Klaag crash land on Earth. While the encounter was the basis for decades of war between Earth and the Klingon Empire, the fact that the worst thing that happened with a first encounter with a Klingon is some light property damage to a farm, I’d say that went rather well.
