First Contact Day: 3 worst first contacts made in Star Trek history
By Chad Porto
April 5 is First Contact Day among the Star Trek fanbase and we’re celebrating with our three worst first contacts in Federation history.
Star Trek: First Contact remains one of the greatest staples in franchise history. It tells the story of how Earth and Zephram Cochran finally got their stuff together and launched a warp-capable ship that caught the eye of the Vulcans. Granted, the film adds a lot to that simple story, like the Borg, a newly debuted Borg Queen, time travel, Data getting his cyber on with said queen, and more.
For the most part, however, it was a story about the first “First Contact” in Star Trek history. So with that out of the way, we decided we’d look at some of the worst first contacts in Starfleet and Star Trek history.
These aren’t the definitive lists, nor as these the only ones, these are just the three we think went very very badly.
So we’re clear, we’re only talking about the first official time the Federation met an alien race.
Three times Star Trek’s first contacts went very badly
The Borg
It’s very safe to say that the first time a Federation vessel came across the Borg, it didn’t go great. The Cube followed the Enterprise in a nerve-racking encounter, that eventually lead to a more violent exchange. Things looked bleak until Q brought the Enterprise to safety. Despite being safe, for the moment, the crew of the Enterprise knew it was just a matter of time before the Borg arrived in earnest.
The Vidiians
When you first meet an alien race, the expectation of a cultural swap is usually the go-to move for many. For the Vidiians, that means taking body parts from various people. That was what happened to Neelix, who met the Vidiians early on in Voyager’s time in the Delta Quadrant. When you talk about how First Contacts can go bad, losing your lungs is pretty near the top of the list.
The Wadi
The Wadi arrived on Deep Space Nine and brought with them the terrible episode “Move Along Home”. The pain and suffering fans went through is enough to make the Wadit he worst First Contact ever.
