What would be considered the “present-day” of Star Trek?
By Chad Porto
According to Terry Matalas, there is a “present-day” in Star Trek.
Star Trek is a show that’s a little hard to follow. For instance, the first show is Trek, now referred to as The Original Series. It was the first show to debut in the franchise. Yet, there are three prequels to it. There’s Enterprise, the first in the timeline, then Discovery’s first two seasons and then there’s Strange New Worlds.
They are also three of the six most recent shows in the series’ history. So it’s a bit complicated to jump right in if you’re unfamiliar with the series and timeline. So it’s not out of line to say there is a “center point” to the Trek universe. A current “present-day” if you will.
Yet, when would that be in the Trek timeline?
What would be considered Star Trek’s “present-day”?
Speaking to fans during the Inglorious Treksperts panel at GalaxyCon, Matalas revealed where he would assume the present-day timeline is (via TrekMovie.com), saying;
"Look, I love this time period in Star Trek, the 25th century. I always view it as the present day in Star Trek, for me. It’s where we all left off. And the way we leave this season is a passing of the torch from the last generation to the next… I would certainly love [the spin-off] to happen. We certainly leave it so that you can do that."
For those wondering, the 25th century contains the current events of Picard. While Picard is the only show in the 25th century, just dozen or so years prior you have Prodigy and Lower Decks, set in 2383 and 2380. Picard started in 2399 and is currently in 2401.
The furthest ahead is Discovery, which is currently in the 32nd century thanks to a time jump.
