Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 production delayed
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was set to begin production on May 2nd.
File this under “we saw it coming.” The Writers Guild of America voted to strike on May 1st, and though that won’t affect the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds which is already complete and is debuting in June, it has caused a problem with the production of season three. Though the scripts have been written, and everything seems ready to go for the third season, with the strike, there could be no writers on sets. So there will be no filming.
According to TrekCentral, Strange New Worlds was listed on the Directors Guild of Canada (DGC) as set to begin filming on May 2nd. On April 17th, the filming dates for the series were removed, and now there are no production notes for the series at all. Season three has been on the DGC for months with the official dates of filming listed as May 2, 2023-September 28, 2023.
So what does this mean for the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?
If the strike ends relatively soon (which doesn’t appear to be the case), the series could still begin filming this year. But, as Deadline reports, studios are cancelling deals because of the strike which is now in its second week, and Variety has provided a list of TV shows and movies that are being affected as well. So it’s not surprising that a Star Trek property is being affected, too.
When the second season premieres on June 15th, it will have been almost a year since the first season ended on July 7, 2022. That was the around the same time as filming wrapped for the second season. The writer’s strike will change this timeline for season three, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see a third season in 2024. At least we have season two to look forward to, and it will run through August 17, 2023. By that time, we might know when we’ll see the third season.
