IDW to launch Star Trek: Strange New World series
Are you ready for yet another Star Trek comic book? As former Star Trek guest star, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson used to say, it doesn’t matter if you’re ready for another Star Trek comic book. Despite flooding the market with Deep Space Nine- The Dog of War mini-series, the current Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Echoes mini-series, and the upcoming Day of the Blood crossover event, Star Trek is unveiling yet another comic by IDW, this one centering around the crew of Strange New Worlds.
The book, entitled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – Scorpius Run, will release its first issue on August 23, a week after the second season’s final episode.
The book will be written by the same crew who did the last Strange New Worlds book, Strange New Worlds – The Illyrian Enigma, which is by Kirsten Beyer and Mike Johnson. Beyer is a co-executive producer for the book, while Johnson is a long-time comic writer.
The arti will once again be done by Angel Hernandez, who also did the Star Trek: Picard – Stargazer comic.
Here’s the synopsis for the book, courtesy of TrekMovie;
"Set course with Captain Pike and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise to the Scorpius constellation! As they venture into the unknown, the Enterprise crew learn what it truly means to traverse through the strange and unfamiliar when they lose contact with Starfleet and find themselves trapped in unexplored space!"
Star Trek may be oversaturating the comic book market as they are the streaming market
The old adage, strike while the iron is hot is a very famous saying and it means that while things are active, you should get the most out of it while you can. I.E., Star Trek is a hot property at the moment, so you should milk every cent out of it while you can.
That’s great if you’re thinking short-term. Flood the market while it’s relevant and then let the franchise return to a static state for a while. That’s something you’ll have to do, especially if you flood the market with content because people will get sick of it.
What Star Trek and IDW are doing on the back end with the comics, is no worse than what the streaming side of things is doing by constantly creating and releasing short-form content. There are so many shows to watch now, and while most of the seasons are only 10 episodes long when you have to watch 30 or 40 of them a year, it becomes a bit much.
Even if they are different episodes.
That’s what’s happening with the comic brand right now, they’re doing too many mini-series and it’s going to hurt the brand. Eventually, people are going to wonder if they’ve already seen these headlines before, and they’re going to tune out.
Then there’s going to be little to no interest in the books, and then what? Do the comics eventually go on hiatus too?
We’ve got to stop the oversaturation.
