Star Trek: Prodigy star, Kate Mulgrew, has been silent about the announcement of the cancellation of the animated series…until now

Kate Mulgrew took on the role of Captain Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek: Voyager, and she made an impression on Star Trek fans around the world. With her no-nonsense attitude and compassionate nature, she quickly became one of the most popular Star Trek captains. When the series ended, we didn’t think we’d ever see her again.

Twenty years later, Mulgrew returned to the beloved role in a different capacity, as Admiral Janeway for the first season of Star Trek: Prodigy. She had dual roles as the hologram Janeway aboard the USS Protostar who was there to help Dal and his friends navigate the ship and as Admiral Janeway, who was on a mission to find and save her friend Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran). But that role came to an end with the cancellation of the Star Trek: Prodigy…at least for now.

Star Trek cannot lose Kate Mulgrew as Admiral Janeway

In a recent tweet, series creators Kevin and Dan Hagemen shared that they would be attending a panel at the upcoming Star Trek Las Vegas convention, jokingly adding that they would be acting out all of season two. Mulgrew responded showing her support and reminding the fans they’ve only just begun.

Presumably, Mulgrew is talking about the potential for another channel to pick up Prodigy’s second season and continue the series. And while I, for one, would love to see the series get another chance, I also know that Star Trek needs Mulgrew’s Admiral Janeway, whether it’s in Prodigy or in a live-action series.

Mulgrew’s depiction of Janeway changed the lives of young adults everywhere. She represented a strong, independent woman in command and a resourceful woman who didn’t back down from a fight or a challenge. She gave teens in 1995 hope that their futures could have limitless possibilities. While it’s doubtful that any of them will be piloting a startship anytime soon, many have grown up and achieved great things because of the impact of Captain Janeway, which is why keeping her character involved in the Star Trek properties can only be beneficial.

"“We still have only just begun.”"
