Hollywood Critics Association Awards nominated Star Trek’s Lower Decks and Picard for awards

Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Picard were nominated for awards.
The Hollywood Critics Association Awards released nominations for this year, and among the nominees were two Trek shows. Both Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Picard were nominated for awards, with shows like Strange New Worlds missing out due to the release window for its second season.
So what were they nominated for?
Picard picked up seven nominations, Best Streaming Drama which they’ll compete against Andor, 1923, Bad BSisters, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, the Boys, The Crown, the Diplomat, the Handmaid’s Tale, and The Mandalorian.
This is arguably the biggest category Picard was put up for.
Picard also saw Patrick Stewart get nominated for Best Actor in Streaming Drama Series, Brent Spiner for Best Supporting Actor in a Streaming Drama Series, Jeri Ryan was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Streaming Drama Series, Michelle Forbes for Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series, and Terry Matalas was nominated for Best Director in a Streaming Drama Series and Best Writer in a Streaming Drama Series.
Star Trek: Lower Decks was nominated for Best Streaming Animated Series or TV Movie, the second year in a row it picked up a nomination in this category.
Nominees are great but they don’t help Star Trek avoid cancelation
If we’ve learned anything, getting nominations is great, but ultimately not a thing one can rely on for future success. Despite Patrick Stewart wanting to do more with Picard and the crew, it seems like his requests were not met by Paramount+. While the show got its planned three seasons, a fourth was rumored and hoped for.
And while Lower Decks is a charming show that the most mighty of fans enjoy, its cancelation could be any given day with the way Paramount+ has been performing. The economics of the service has made it possible for any show to be canceled at any time and for any reason.
So while the awards are nice, they are not a sign that the franchise is doing well. So it’s important to watch as much Trek as possible to avoid seeing shows get the axe.
