Who played Spock’s mom on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ “Charades”?

“Charades” was one of the episodes from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ second season. In the episode, an alien life-form accidentally damages Spock and Christine Chapel, and to make amends, fixes Spock, but in doing so removes his Vulcan DNA from him.

This sets off a Benny-Hill-like series of events where Spock has to complete a Vulcan ceremony in order to justify marrying his fiance, T’Pring. Due to this ceremony, Spock’s mother arrives. His mother, Amanda Grayson, is a character that Trek fans will be familiar with.

Different actresses have played Amanda Grayson. Jane Wyatt played her originally before Majel Barrett took over for the Animated Series. Cynthia Blaise played a young Amanda in Star Trek V, while Winona Ryder played her in the Kelvin Timeline.

But who played her on Strange New Worlds? Well, Trek fans may recognize her as the same woman who played her in Discovery, Mia Kirshner. After appearing as Spock’s mother in the first and second seasons of Discovery, she returned to the role of Strange New Worlds.

What other things has Mia Kirshner been in besides Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?

Besides Discovery, Trek fans may recognize Mia Kirshner from several other properties. She may b most familiar for her work on “The L Word”, where she starred across 70 episodes. She also had a significant role on the CW’s The Vampire Diaries, Fox’s 24, and Wolf Lake.

But she’s not new to the world of science fiction, however. She had a meaty role on the SyFy series, “Defiance”, so she was doing science fiction before her turn on Discovery.

While it’s unknown if she’ll reprise her role as Amanda Grayson anytime soon, it stands to reason that she will. She’s already been on two different series, and across three different seasons worth of shows for Star Trek. Clearly the higher-ups like what she adds to the table.
