Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has a musical episode releasing tomorrow entitled “Subscape Rhapsody.”
Honestly, I think all Star Trek fans are concerned about the musical planned for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but since it’s already done and ready to be aired, there’s nothing we can do but watch and hope it’s good.
Musicals aren’t what we’d associate with Star Trek, no matter how good the voices of the actors are. In fact, the suggestion of a musical by Ronald D. Moore in the 1990s was immediately nixed. Scott Bakula did tell William Shatner on Shatner’s Raw Nerve [via Trekmovie] that he thought a musical episode would happen at some point on Star Trek: Enterprise and that the cast was actually looking forward to it. But it never came to fruition. Bakula believed that had to do with the seriousness of the storylines. It would have been inappropriate for him to break into song.
Strange New Worlds has covered some serious topics this season as well, with the most recent, “Under the Cloak of War,” digging deep into the trauma of war. And next we’re going to have a musical. Whatever made the executive producers decide to forego the usual restraint and warp ahead into musical territory, I don’t know. But the entire song list has now been made available on Apple as a pre-release for August 4, 2023. Here are the songs you can expect to hear:
"Star Trek Strange New Worlds Main Title (Subspace Rhapsody Version),” “Status Report,” “Connect To Your Truth,” “How Would That Feel,” “Private Conversation,” “Keeping Secrets,” “I’m Ready,” “I’m the X,” “Keep Us Connected,” “We Are One,” and “Subspace Rhapsody End Credit Medley.”"
Can the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds sing?
We know at least two of the cast members, Celia Rose Gooding who won a Grammy Award for Jagged Little Pill and Christina Chong, who is releasing an upcoming album, can belt out the tunes. But what about the rest of the cast? Well, that’s something we’ll find out tomorrow because the entire cast will be breaking into song.
Does this planned episode make fans nervous? Absolutely. But Strange New Worlds has taken some creative leaps that have worked so it’s very well possible this will work, too. While it might not end up being a fan favorite episode, it certainly won’t bring down the popularity of the successful series.
