William Shatner has embraced hologram technology, and recently, he sat down for a conversation with a Protobot Hologram Avatar.
No Star Trek fan should ever be surprised by any conversation William Shatner is willing to explore. The former Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise on Star Trek: The Original Series clearly has a quest for knowledge. Whether it’s being the oldest living person to travel to space at ninety or embracing 3d hologram technology for his gravesite, Shatner is open to new ideas and new experiences with technology, and that includes the prevalence of artificial intelligence.
Most recently, the ninety-two-year old Emmy Award winner had a rather interesting conversation with Protobot’s newest Hologram Avator. The two discussed AI ethics, how the AI was programmed when it came to ethics, and whether or not the AI experienced bias or prejudices. The results of the conversation were impressive.
William Shatner challenges AI with important questions about ethics
There’s no denying that Shatner is extremely intelligent. Thinking quickly, he challenged the Protobot with such questions as:
"“Are you truthful? How would I provide ethical guidelines to you so that they are unbreakable? What can you tell me about justice?”"
Surprisingly, the AI responded with answers that made it clear they weren’t pre-programmed answers. This particular AI technology essentially carried on a conversation with Shatner as though it was a real person.
If there’s one thing this chat does, it’s show that as much as some people might wish for artificial intelligence to go away, that’s not going to happen. Clearly, it’s here to stay. Conversations like this can help people grow more comfortable with the technology, and, in turn, we can learn to use it in ways that will best benefit humanity.
