Star Trek Day 2023 is here!

It’s time, once again, for the annual Star Trek Day event. The yearly celebration, hosted by CBS and Paramount+, started in 2020 officially. While it is a look back at the franchise’s start in 1966, the idea of celebrating the show didn’t come until 2020 when CBS wanted to create content during the pandemic era of television and streaming.

Since then, the concept has been used as Star Trek’s own mini-Comic Con event, where they streaming and television giant would feature unique guests, new trailers, big announcements and the like.

And that was going to happen again in 2023, but then the Writers and Actors Strikes of 2023 happened, handcuffing the fledgling, annual event. Now, instead of huge bombastic announcements, new trailers and all sorts of great content, fans were left with a simple 20+ minute video, the announcements of some gaming content and the debut of the “very very Short Treks” series.

Star Trek Day 2023 and what fans got from the stream

The stream, hosted by Star Trek: Lower Deck’s Jerry O’Connell, featured just what was announced. We saw a lot of clips being reviewed, the hyping up of Discovery’s final season and some fan interaction at the end.

It was largely a ho-hum event, and one that will be remembered for not being very memorable. The hope is that now, after seeing how bad this really was, that the folks who run Star Trek will put pressure on studio heads to resolve the stirke, and bring the crews back to work.

Fans are not going to be ok with another version of this next year, which means that Paramount and CBS as a whole have to really work to regain the trust of the viewers. The strike has gone terribly for the studios and the support is clearly on the talents’ side.

Hopefully next year’s Star Trek day is a bet more optimistic.
