Is Ed Speleers open to doing more work with the Star Trek brand?
By Chad Porto
Star Trek may see a lot more of Ed Speleers in the future if he gets his wish.
Star Trek: Picard ended its run after three up-and-down seasons. The show struggled to find its voice and when it finally did, it ended on a rather lackluster storyline revisiting the Borg and Jean-Luc Picard once again. Had that been how the show ended, it’s likely we don’t talk a lot about it, however, the creators delivered a very interesting final sequence that got fans excited.
While fans can debate whether the return of the Borg, again, to fight Picard was the right call, what no one should deny is that it was a good idea to set up Picard’s son, Jack Crusher (played by Ed Speleers) for new adventures of his own.
After getting his first assignment as a member of Starfleet, Jack ends up alone in his quarters, confronted by Q, the god-like alien being who tormented Picard for decades to the glee and amusement of fans everywhere. Now, a new series has presented itself as a possibility; nicknamed Star Trek: Legacy by many, including Picard’s showrunner, Terry Matalas.
When asked by Star Trek: Explorer magazine (viaTrekMovie.com) if Speleers would be open to returning to Star Trek, he leapt at the opportunity, saying;
"I would be there with bells on. If the opportunity presents itself, then sign me up, Scotty!"
The man who plays Jack Crusher would also go on to say he hopes to continue the story idea with de Lancei’s Q, saying;
"I just hope it’s the first of many scenes with John de Lancie."
Jack Crusher in the Star Trek: Academy show makes the most sense
With the current state of streaming, Paramount and Star Trek as a whole, the best way to continue the Jack Crusher and Q storyline is to infuse it into the proposed and greenlit Star Trek: Academy show. It seems unlikely that we’ll get yet another new show anytime soon, not just due to the pending strikes, but due to how Paramount has sort of turned on Trek and started to reduce their overall impact on the brand as a whole.
A Crusher-centric Academy show makes the most sense, but who knows what’s going to happen next?
