By now, we thought everyone had practically given up on Star Trek 4 ever coming to fruition.

That changed when Lindsey Anderson Beer, an original co-screenwriter for the much-anticipated yet constantly derailed film told Collider [via Trekmovie] that Star Trek 4 was “still on the tracks.”

"[Star Trek 4] is, it’s still on the tracks. I love that project, and it was another one that I had to hop off of to direct this movie, and that was a hard thing to do."

It’s been a year and a half since we last heard a peep from J.J. Abrams about the movie, and though the cast remains committed to returning to their roles, there has been no forward momentum. Instead, there have been plenty of steps back.

Director Matt Shakman exited the project in 2022. Before that, Chris Hemsworth mentioned a bad script in 2018 that kept the movie from moving forward. Zachary Quinto told Star Trek Las Vegas about a month ago that he didn’t know if and when it will happen, and even Chris Pine said he wouldn’t be surprised if the movie wasn’t made simply because Beyond didn’t do as well at the box office as the studio had hoped.

So does the Star Trek 4 screenwriter know something we don’t know?

Beer left the movie to do Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, a prequel to 2019’s Pet Sematary. If she’s had any involvement in the movement of Star Trek 4, it’s something that hasn’t been revealed to the masses. Of course, that doesn’t mean much as the fans are usually the last to know, but one would think Abrams would have said something by now.

With so much silence and the actors not even sure if the movie is happening, I wouldn’t get too excited about the possibility of another film in the Star Trek franchise, at least not until we have concrete proof…like actual sight of the train on the tracks.
