Michelle Yeoh is being given big-time praise for keeping Star Trek: Section 31 alive.

Star Trek: Section 31 is among the most cursed projects in recent Star Trek history, maybe just outside of Star Trek 4. What separates the two projects is that Trek 4 isn’t being made as of right now, and Section 31 is. And apparently, that’s got a lot to do with Yeoh.

The made-for-streaming movie; Section 31, was once seen as the first real spinoff from Discovery but it got delayed and delayed and delayed, allowing for a show like Strange New Worlds to come along and resonate with fans. The project was going to feature Michelle Yeoh in the starring role, reprising her role from Discovery, but the show never happened.

During the show’s developmental hell, Yeoh exploded in popularity due to a string of well-received performances, and because of that she blew up in popularity. Star Trek decided to not cancel the Section 31 property and instead changed it from a series to a film that will air exclusively on Paramount+.

Now, Alex Kurtzman is revealing that Yeoh had a lot to do with saving the project, telling fans at the New York Comic Con (via TrekMovie.com)

"So we are back on our feet after the strike with Section 31. It is happening. Michelle [Yeoh] is just the most extraordinary person on every level. She had one of one of the most unbelievable years that anybody could ever have in the history of ever, and she had a million opportunities to hit the jackpot on it and do other things. And what she did with all of the power she had accrued is make sure that Section 31 was moving forward."

It’s unclear when and how Michelle Yeoh saved Star Trek: Section 31

Now we’re not sure when Yeoh flexed her newfound power to save the project. We’re under the impression that it happened when the development of the show ended, and the project was later revived as a film. But, it could also have been more recently.

Due to the writer’s and actors’ strike, studios lost a lot of money and so fringe properties like Star Trek are usually impacted the most. Trek is a property that costs a lot of money but doesn’t deliver the ratings needed to justify such expensive costs.

It’s why Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled and it’s likely why other shows like Discovery and Prodigyg were all canceled as well.
