Hellboy I and Hellboy II: The Golden Army

The Hellboy films were not only one of the biggest entries for Guillermo del Toro but for Doug Jones as well. Jones famously played Abe Sapien in the first film. A long, slender, creature that resembled the Creature from the Black Lagoon but behaved more like Hank McCoy from the X-Men. The character gained rave reviews, there was just one problem; while Jones played the character in the suit, he didn’t voice the character.

Instead, famed television actor David Hyde Pierce did. He did a wonderful job as the creature, but by this point, Jones had started developing a fanbase and fans wanted to hear what he could do with a real movie role to his credit.

Enter Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Jones returned with most of the cast, with a few exceptions, namely Pierce. He didn’t return to the role of Abe Sabian for the sequel and instead, del Torro gave his friend the role completely, body and voice, and fans loved it.

Save for the fact that Abe had a bit more reduced role this time around. Why was that? Jones was not one, but three characters in the film; also playing Chamberlain a doorkeeper, and the Angel of Death; who was another character only Jones could pull off.

As far as a showcase of his acting, the second Hellboy film is truly his own personal masterpiece.
