Now that the SAG AFTRA strike is over, fans are resuming the push for a Star Trek: Legacy series.
The call for Star Trek: Legacy began before the third season of Star Trek: Picard ended. It was put on hold for a while during the SAG-AFTRA strike in that actors couldn’t discuss the topic. Fans still expressed their desire for a continuation of Seven of Nine’s journey as a captain, but now, after the success of the #savestartrekprodigy campaign, their efforts are getting stronger.
From trending on Twitter/X to a new Star Trek: Picard season three watching schedule, #startreklegacy has become the next most-talked about Star Trek project and rightly so. The desire for this show hasn’t diminished, and the petition to create it garnered over 62,000 signatures. That should tell the powers-that-be that this isn’t likely to be something fans will forget.
So what happens if Star Trek: Legacy doesn’t get greenlight?
Fans won’t be happy. I know Star Trek fans have been unhappy before, and Paramount might think we’ll get over it, but that might be a long time coming. Though a Legacy series will undoubtedly be expensive to make, the ending of Star Trek: Discovery is bound to open up some funds even with the creation of Starfleet Academy.
Whether or not Paramount knew Terry Matalas was setting things up for a potential spin-off beforehand, they know it now. And we fans are telling the studio that this is a show we want to see even more than Starfleet Academy. Okay, I might not be correct in assuming every fan wants to see this series more than Starfleet Academy, but I do know about 62,000 of us really, really want to see it.
Now that the strike is over, the actors will begin to get other jobs and start moving away from Star Trek if an offer to continue their characters doesn’t come. So let’s hope Paramount is paying attention to this new push and will move forward with the series at this point.
