Sonequa Martin-Green talks about how Star Trek’s Michael Burnham changed her life
By Chad Porto
Sonequa Martin-Green is ending her run as Michael Burnham on Star Trek: Discovery and she’s been changed by her character.
Star Trek: Discovery will come to a close in a matter of months and the stories and adventures of the show has taken viewers on will end. Series star Sonequa Martin-Green, who played the series lead, Michael Burnham, appears to be grateful for the experience.
Speaking at the Fan Expo event in San Francisco, Martin-Green revealed that she was profoundly changed by Burnham, telling the crowd there (viaCollider), how her character helped shape her own view on things, saying;
"I can’t help but see these qualities and with Michael Burnham, Captain Michael Burnham, one of the things that touched me, was this sacrificial lifestyle, and living a life of true honor. And I’ve said this before too, but really being in a position where, no matter what happens at any moment of any day you’re down to die for anyone, whether you know them or not, whether they’re in front of you or not.Even in Discovery, they sacrificed everything for a future they couldn’t see, and so I really broke that down toward the end of the series and just allowed that to change me. Because then, the people who do that in real life, who are laying their lives down all the time, at the drop of a hat, no matter what, just because they value life, the way it should be valued is huge to me. So that was the first thing that popped into my mind."
Sonequa Martin-Green is one of the most likable stars of Star Trek, despite her character’s writing
It’s hard not to root for Martin-Green. She’s immensely likable and a serious talent. Anyone who has seen her on The Walking Dead prior to her turn on Discovery will be able to tell you how good she is. Sadly, Discovery was bogged down far too often with the nonsense that helped turn fans off the show.
Despite her acting prowess and most of the cast she starred alongside, the writing failed them time and time again, as did changes to the franchise’s lore that just felt unnecessary and outdated. They tried to paint a new product in the same color as the shows that came before it, burdening it with too much lore that it didn’t need to shoulder. Instead of letting it be their own show, they tried to attach it to already popular parts of the property and it failed.
So while Burnham may not be viewed too favorably, no one can deny what Martin-Green brought to the table.
