Another Star Trek game lands on consoles to close out 2024

Star Trek is getting a new console game soon but it's not entirely brand new.

In 2021, Tilting Point LLC published a game called Star Trek: Legends for mobile devices. The game is an RPG (role-playing game), where you can play up to 70 Star Trek characters from across the franchise's timeline. The RPG element apparently reflects heavily in its combat, which requires a level of tactician that is lost in other mobile games.

As with other RPGs, you level up your characters and like in classic franchises like Final Fantasy, you receive special attacks and abilities as you improve your characters. However, because it is an RPG, that means narrative control does exist to an extent. You can affect how the game plays out depending on your choices.

For the longest time, this was only out on mobile devices, primarily Apple-based ones. Now, however, you can play it on consoles. On Dec. 25, 2024, the game was released for PS4, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch consoles.

The game has received some reviews that cover the spectrum but for the most part, it's received more positive reviews than negative. On Metacritic's website, out of five reviews, three were positive, one was mediocre and only one was bad.

Now this was for the mobile version, not the console version that just dropped.

The game landing on a console like Switch is a good thing, as that console generally favors more RPG-focused games like Star Trek: Legends. It's a good base for the game to be exposed to, but the key to fans getting the game will be the price.

Luckily, or unluckily depending on how things shake out, the game is only $11.99 for the base edition and $13.99 for the complete edition. That's likely the base game plus any DLC. That's a nice, affordable entry point for a game. Usually, though, it's also a sign that the game may have some issues that make having the price be that low a necessity.

Regardless, I've yet to play it but will make it a point to do so to see if the new console version is truly worth sinking money into. It does look like the $13.99 is a sale price for the Switch, so if you're looking to get the complete edition, you better do so before it returns to its standard price of $19.99.
