Star Trek: Picard ended without one sign of Harry Kim, even though there was a spot for him. According to an interview with Trekmovie, Garrett Wang said his manager told him he'd been cast in the third season of Picard.
In the original script, Captain Harry Kim was going to take the place of Admiral Shelby . And when discussions first started, Wang was going to be in three episodes. That soon got whittled down to two then one. But the script had been written, and Wang was in it. Wang's manager even told him he needed to be in Los Angeles for a fitting for Picard.
According to Wang, Jeri Ryan, who played Seven of Nine on the series, told him she'd seen the script with Harry's name in it, and then there were revisions. After those were done, his name was no longer in the script.
Wang admitted that he was depressed after the opportunity fell through, and he was "literally crying into my own sleeve." As a sci-fan, Wang follows the new Trek shows, and since season one of Lower Decks, he'd been waiting on a call from creator Mike McMahan to bring Harry back to the universe. That finally happened, and Harry Kim showed up in season five's ninth episode. But because the action took place outside of the Prime timeline, Harry Kim is still an ensign as far as canon is concerned.
So Wang is hoping for a call from Star Trek: Prodigy that will allow his character to return and possibly get the promotion he has long deserved. "I wish I would get a call from Prodigy to work on that show. I would love to," Wang said. If Prodigy is renewed for season three, this really is something that needs to happen. Harry Kim is long overdue for a live-action return and a promotion.
