#3 Worst Starfleet Uniform - Star Trek: Enterprise S1

Nov. 2, 2015 – CBS Television Studios announced today it will launch a totally new “Star Trek” television series in January 2017. The brand-new “Star Trek” will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966. The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network. The premiere episode and all subsequent

Utility – I find that S1 of “Enterprise” particularly, boasts an odd combo of a leisurewear/military style jumpsuit with zippers in some places that seem useless. The tightness at the neck of the collarless black button-down tunic underneath the jumpsuit appears uncomfortable. Not to mention if you needed to remove layers of clothing to crawl into an engineering conduit, for example – you couldn’t just remove your entire jumpsuit without exposing your undergarments! You’d have to open the front zipper and pull the top half of the jumpsuit down hanging over your waist. Certainly, not an efficient use of the uniform in an emergency. Overall, the uniform is too casual given the context of their mission to explore space, make first contact with alien species, and establish the foundation for the UFP. Utility Score: 2.5

Military Ranking – There are visible military bars on the left chest of the jumpsuit that likely do indicate rank based on the number of insignias, however, the insignias are made of a clear material and are hard to see. Given the small crew of “Enterprise,” recognizing a ranking officer isn’t necessarily a problem. However, I suspect that would not be the case on a larger starship, Starbase, or even at Starfleet Academy with thousands of personnel on base.  Additionally, with a naval-inspired fleet, I find it disappointing that there are no rankings on the cuff of the sleeve, which is often found in U.S. Naval military uniforms. Ranking Score: 2.5

Departmental Colors – I respect the use of TOS departmental colors of gold, red, and blue on both shoulders of the jumpsuit. It’s clear to distinguish the different command, vs engineering, vs science/medicine departmental personnel. The colors are clear and a refreshing interpretation of the departmental Star Trek canon, given this crew takes place in the early years of Starfleet. Colors Score: 3.5

Enterprise's Total Score: 8.5 out of 15
