#2 Worst Uniform - Star Trek: Next Generation S1

Utility – In S1 of TNG the uniforms look like an adult onesie bodysuit! There seems to be no clear or quick access to get in or out of the uniform. There are seemingly no zippers as part of the uniform, making it awkward in any rush or emergency situation to put on or take off the uniform. It defies nearly any military or Starfleet's practical use. The tightness of the bodysuit style could be an issue for larger-framed officers like Lt. Worf who often appeared constrained in his uniform. Additionally, with the tight bodysuit design, there has been some criticism of the objectivation of female personnel in these body-hugging uniforms; however, notably not as severe in the case of Seven of Nine’s uniform [via Screenrant] in “Star Trek: Voyager”. Utility Score: 2
Military Ranking – The gold circular insignia pendants on the right lapel of the uniform are a great use of how to clearly indicate Starfleet ranks. This is extremely important with starship crews the size of 600 to 1000 personnel or more. I like the simple sleek design of the pendants that are similarly utilized in the animated series "Star Trek: Lower Decks". However, what could have taken this military insignia rank to the next level is if the uniform had a similar rank insignia on the cuff of the sleeve in a sleek, yet similar manner that was done on the Starfleet uniforms from “Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country”. Ranking Score: 2.5
Departmental Colors – In an effort to change the "Redshirt" troupe of pending demise on away missions, TNG creators made a departure from the TOS Star Trek canon. Where red, not gold, indicated the command departments, and gold, not red, was for engineering, security, and operations departments, and blue was maintained as science and medical departments. I get it, but the TOS departmental colors are iconic, and I cannot image Captain Kirk in a red shirt! Despite this change, the departmental colors are clearly visible and defined in are easily identifiable way. Colors Score: 3
TNG's Total Score: 7.5 out of 15
