How Star Trek: Lower Decks got Jolene Blalock to return

Before Star Trek: Lower Decks, Jolene Blalock hadn't been in a Star Trek production since Star Trek: Enterprise's series finale in 2005. It's not that she hasn't been offered, but she chose to step away from acting for a while, but Lower Decks' series creator, Mike McMahan, really wanted her to be on the show. According to an interview he gave CinemaBlend, he'd heard that Blalock had said no to other Star Trek appearances so he wasn't optimistic about getting her. But that didn't stop him from making an effort.

Instead of going through an agent or manager, he reached out to her via a letter, telilng her "how important her work on Enterprise was to me not only as a fan, but also as a writer of Star Trek and how I defined Vulcans and that T’Lyn is like kind of a love letter to her work [as T’Pol] among others." He also included the script for "Fissure Quest," the series ninth episode of the season.

He went on saying, "It may have just been that we got to her instead of an agent and she read it and was like, ‘Oh, this looks fun,’ because she came in saying she loves the show." And when she came in to record her lines, she asked if it would be okay to just be credited as "Jolene." McMahan responded by telling her "and we were like, ‘Jolene, it is whatever you want to be.’ I think a lot of times in this industry you are told what you're allowed to do. And I really wanted to make sure that she felt like she was in charge of defining stuff because we were so appreciative of her coming back. She didn't tell me why, but she was like, ‘I would prefer just to be Jolene in this,’ and we were happy to do it."

With Blalock having returned in a voice capacity, she might be potentially open to returning in other animated series where she can slip back into the role as easily as she did with Lower Decks. And odds are good she could be credited with whatever name she chose to use as Enterprise fans just want her to return to the franchise. Now that we've gotten her back for one episode, Star Trek: Prodigy could use her vocal talents. And even if not in animation, she could return vocally via hologram recording on Starfleet Academy. Of course, we'd love to see her in live-action again, but fans are certainly open to taking what an actor is willing to give.
