Star Trek: Lower Decks is wrapping up its final season and once it's over, Star Trek fans will be looking for a franchise comedy to sink their teeth into. For better or for worse. The folks at Star Trek seem to have the next idea set up, featuring Lower Decks star Tawny Newsome as lead writer.

Newsome is writing a new show that seems to be set on a tourist planet of sorts, think Risa, and will focus on the crew who manage the establishments on said planet. It seems like a fine idea and one that could have some serious legs to it if it's done well.

All that said, we haven't heard much about it since the franchise made a soft announcement about it. We've gotten a lot of headway on the the new show, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, but nothing on the new comedy. This, despite the fact, that the work for Lower Decks is all but over. Everyone has finished their obligations to the franchise, so you'd expect some momentum on the series while there is some heat still to the idea.

Especially if fans see it as a spiritual successor to Lower Decks. Now would be the time to strike with announcements. Yet, nothing. So when Collider caught up with Newsome, one of the things they had to know was if there was any movement on the new show, and the lead writer let them know that work is still being done;

“All I can share with you is that we keep writing it, and we keep turning things in, and they keep saying, ‘Please keep writing.’ So as long as they allow us to do that and they don’t say, ‘Stop. Close your computers and go home,’ we’ll continue making it," Newsome confirmed.

While we can debate about whether or not Star Trek needs more comedy, we're on board with seeing what Newsome can do with a show of her own. She's a multi-talented star and her performances on both Lower Decks and again on Strange New Worlds really do show off how charismatic and dynamic she can be.

Giving her a show to lead would be a very interesting adventure, one that may not turn out all too bad, If the show is a bit more reigned in from the shenanigan-fest that was Lower Decks, that is. Lower Decks didn't land with a lot of fans, and it's because of the way it depicted Starfleet. A lot of fans view Starfleet as that one aspect that Gene Roddenberry got right, and to see it devolve into splatstick nonsense didn't sit right with many fans.

Featuring a show outside of Starfleet may work better for fans as they wouldn't feel that the show was making a joke out of the one thing we all hold dear.
