New Star Trek comedy will explore life outside the Federation if greenlit

Star Trek has never spent much time on non-Federation planets, and we know little about them. If Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien's new workplace comedy gets greenlit, that's about to change. As Newsome told Variety [via Trekmovie], the planet this comedy will explore was "never Risa" as many fans have speculated. "But it is still an outside-of-the-Federation world that we’re dealing with. I think it’s going to answer some questions about what non-Federation look like. That’s an area of canon we haven’t explored a ton. But it’s clay being currently molded," Newsome added.

Being that this resort planet is outside of the Federation, it does call into question how their day-to-day activities and exploits are being broadcast to the quadrant. Do they have a mole in their midst? Is someone from the Federation spying on them? Or was it simply a miscalculation that has enabled the Federation and the rest of the galaxy to tune in?

Though we don't know much about this comedy as it still hasn't been greenlit by Paramount yet, hopefully, it won't be one that includes a laugh track and will allow viewers to form their own opinion on whether or not something is funny. That will be the true test of whether or not the show is successful.

Newsome did specify that she and Simien aren't trying to "mess with the Trek of it all," which makes it sound like we'll still be seeing Starfleet and the Federation. There has to be a connection to Star Trek somewhere and somehow. It will be interesting to see that done with the home base being a non-Federation planet. Just how will the agencies that make up Star Trek play a role in a comedy with outsiders? Hopefully, we'll find out in 2025 whether the show has been given the thumbs-up so we'll get more information on what to expect from this unique comedy.
