3 of the biggest mistakes of Star Trek's Nu Trek Era

Star Trek: Discovery's mutinous "hero"
People forget how big of a "get" it was for Discovery to land Sonequa Martin-Green fresh off of her run on The Walking Dead. The series was still super popular at the time of Discovery's debut, and her involvement in the show was a selling point at the time. Yet, a large amount of mistakes that occurred during and after production hindered the show.
But maybe none more so than the plot of her character. Martin-Green played Michael Burnham, the unknown, and never-talked-about adopted sister of Spock. Because she grew up on Vulcan alongside Spock, she behaved and mimicked Vulcan personality traits. Despite her constant practice of things like logic and emotional control, she failed to exhibit those traits when she committed an act of treason, started a war with the Klingons, and then got her captain killed.
Instead of a noble and proud leader, or a young upstart with potential flowing off of them, we were given someone who was beyond redemption. She was responsible for the deaths of untold numbers of people through her actions, actions she wasn't permitted to take. It's one thing for a leader to make a bad call, it's another thing for someone to make a bad call for a leader.
The writers did everything they could to make her seem edgy and cool and in doing so they failed. By the fifth season, the character that Martin-Green played was nowhere close to resembling the one she started playing in season one.
