Star Trek will once again take the stage at the San Diego Comic-Con, the mecca of all things nerdy. The event used to be for comic books. Namely comic book enthusiasts, traders, retailers, and collectors alike. Yet, as the convention grew, so did the amount of things offered at the con. Interviews meet and greats, trailer debuts, and major announcements started to become the big reason for fans to go. So much so that smaller conventions also started doing similar things.
Now, the SDCC is the premier event of the nerd calendar, with everyone from Star Trek to Marvel to Nickelodeon, Funko, Bandai Namco and so many other major brands in attendance. For most of them, this is the time to debut major additions to their lineups, be it comics, toys, shows, or films. It's also a time for trailers to get debuted. Especially for outlets like Star Trek, that don't generally have conventions at this scale.
So it's usually the best chance to announce something major, as the amount of press at this event is unlike anything else Star Trek offers. So these are three things we're hoping they announce.
1. A new Star Trek video game
The most recent trend of Star Trek video games did alright. The Prodigy-based game, Supernova was a minor hit, while the role-playing game, Resurgence, impressed some critics and fans. Yet, aside from the Star Trek Online video game, now going strong for 14 years, Star Trek fans haven't gotten their hands on an elite-level game in some time. Some would argue that the Voyager-centric Elite Force and Elite Force II were the last great versions of Star Trek games.
2. Announcements for Star Trek series
This is two-fold. We want trailers for the upcoming Lower Decks series, but we expect that. So what we'd like is for the entire cast for Star Trek: Academy to be announced, as well as any other non-theatrical projects to be announced. Be it a third show to follow Academy and Strange New Worlds, or a second made-for-streaming film (with Section 31 being the first).
3. Surprise theatrical announcement
Depending on who you ask, there is either one, two, or even four Star Trek films in the works. However, only two, Star Trek 4 and the Star Trek prequel film, are intended to be theatrical releases. The prequel film has been met with ire after it was revealed that it would be set before Star Trek: Enterprise and shortly after the events of First Contact. So the film most fans still care about is the fourth installment of the Kelvin timeline.
