Doug Jones has the perfect idea for Saru if he taught at Starfleet Academy
When the credits rolled on the final episode of Star Trek: Discovery, I realized how much I would miss Saru [Doug Jones]. Introduced as a Kelpien, a new species in the Star Trek universe, Saru went on a journey of self-discovery that took him from fear to acceptance of power. After he lost his threat ganglia, he became a different leader, and I just cannot imagine a character who will ever be quite like Saru. Maybe I won't have to. Though Discovery is over, the characters still exist in canon, and that means Saru could return.
Starfleet Academy, the newest series from Star Trek, will be set in the 32nd century, and Saru is a Federation ambassador who is often seen at Federation Headquarters. With the ability to speak 94 or so languages, he would bring a lot to students if he were to join the faculty, even part-time. When asked about this potential by Trekmovie, Jones said that while he hasn't gotten the call to appear on the new series, he would "never say never to such an opportunity."
"Um, what would he do? I assume he would be a guest lecturer of some sort, and because he does speak 94 languages, and I think he might be, we might be in the-and now that he’s an ambassador for smaller planets, and being a liaison between them joining the Federation, he might be one who talks about the languages and the diversity of planets that he represents, could be a way of connecting all of the different species that are in the cadet room and finding a way for communication between those with differences."
- Doug Jones
The Discovery writers made Saru a born teacher. Along with a plethora of knowledge, he had the necessary patience as shown by his interactions with Tilly [Mary Wiseman]. And Jones' idea sounds like one that could work for Starfleet Academy. With his kindness, sense of duty and discipline, and belief in the best of people, he would be a perfect addition to the list of at the academy. And I truly hope this is something the producers of Starfleet Academy will consider...even if only for a few guest spots.
