Had Star Trek: Discovery been renewed, a Short Treks' episode would have been further explored

The cancellation of Star Trek: Discovery after its fifth season had already finished production came as a shock to the cast, crew, and to the fans. The cast was allowed to go back and film some ending scenes to properly wrap up the series, and one of those scenes involved Discovery being ordered by Admiral Burnham to wait out in space.

In Short Treks, "Calypso," Craft, a human solider trying to get home after a ten year war, was brought aboard Discovery, after it had been sitting in space for 1,000 years. Craft had almost died in an escape pod., and Zora, Discovery's computer, brought him aboard the ship to save his life. In just a few minutes, this episode told a beautiful story of a man wanting to return home to his wife and child while trying not to fall in love with Zora.

Had Discovery been renewed for a sixth season, we would have gotten more information as to why the ship had been sent on a Red Directive mission and ordered to wait in space. According to showrunner, Michelle Paradise, the season would have focused on the "Calypso" mystery. [via GiantFreakinRobot] instead of just having a single scene in the finale. Whether or not we would have gotten more information on Craft or even seen him again remains unknown.

Zora, having become fully self-aware, fell in love with Craft, and their relationship would have been a story worth telling, especially since it was the first time the computer had taken on an actual form. It had been ten years since Craft had seen his family. He didn't even know if they were still alive on his planet so the door could have been open for him to return to Discovery and find a home with Zora. Sadly, this is a story that will go untold.
