Is the door closed for Star Trek: Legacy, or is there still a chance for the sequel?

Star Trek: Picard ended over a year ago after setting up a sequel with Jeri Ryan's Seven of Nine becoming captain of the newly minted Enterprise. Picard showrunner, Terry Matalas, has given the sequel a name, Star Trek: Legacy, and the fans have been behind the idea 100%. However, nothing has happened despite petitions and demands for the adventures of the Star Trek: The Next Generation legends and the Picard cast to continue. And Matalas is now the showrunner for the upcoming Marvel series, Vision, which has a tentative release schedule of 2026. That would effectively make Matalas unavailable to lead Legacy. So is the door closed now, or is there still hope?

Screenrant spoke with Todd Stashwick, who played Captain Liam Shaw, on Picard recently, and the actor was asked if he thought there was a real chance Legacy could actually happen. Stashwick acknowledged that he just didn't know but thinks "there's always a chance."

"I don’t have a crystal ball. I know that David Ellison is a good man. He is the Skydance [CEO]... I don’t know. I think he’s a Star Trek fan. Uh, I don’t know. That would be a question for them. I think there’s always a chance that they could do a Legacy. It’s just not gonna happen this year [and] probably not next year. Terry Matalas is tied up doing other stuff. So they’d probably have to wait til he’s available. So I don’t have an answer for you."

David Ellison was the executive producer of Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond so could that be a good sign for Star Trek's franchise? It all comes down to what is going to make the newly-merged Skydance and Paramount+ the most money. And while fans are promising to tune into Legacy, by the time it rolls around, interest could very well have waned...both from the actors and the fans.

I wouldn't say the door is firmly shut against the possibility of a Legacy series, but it looks like it's definitely being pushed in that direction, which is a shame considering the promise the series has. Perhaps, though, Legacy will be seen as a risk worth taking because of fan dedication. One thing is for sure. If Legacy doesn't get a greenlight even down the road, some fans may decide they don't want to continue with a franchise that doesn't take their wants into consideration.
