Just like other Star Trek series, Star Trek: Discovery got better after its first season
The first season can be a rough start for some Star Trek series. Maybe there are growing pains or just an adjustment phase, but Star Trek: The Next Generation went through it as did Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. There were some episodes that are totally unwatchable to this day. And Star Trek: Discovery faced the same issues in its first season as well.
Shonequa Martin-Green, who played Michael Burnham, was just finding her way into the role, and this was the first Star Trek series where the person who would eventually be captain was actually a criminal. So that was a different take on a series in the beloved franchise. That said, as the season went on, things started to smooth out a little more before really picking up in season two.
There are plenty of fans who've said they never watched beyond the first season or even after the first couple of episodes. Had viewers stopped after seeing some of the first season episodes of The Next Generation, they would have missed out on a show that has become one of the best in the franchise.
We are all Star Trek fans, and though some series may not be for us, Discovery took a lot of verbal beatings it didn't deserve. There were plenty of standout episodes after season one, and we can't forget the introduction of Captain Pike [Anson Mount], Spoke [Ethan Peck], and Number One [Rebecca Romijn] in season two. [There's also an excellent Short Trek with Spock and Number One.]
In every series, there are characters that fans didn't like. Wesley Crusher [Wil Wheaton] and Neelix [Ethan Phillips] come to mind, but then there are others who really stand out. It's the same with Discovery. I was one of those fans who originally didn't make it past the first two episodes, but I came back much later and discovered something unique that I really enjoyed. That might not be the case for you, but it's something to consider if you're on the fence about watching Discovery or have only viewed a few episodes.
