Kate Mulgrew asks fans if they will campaign for a season three for Star Trek: Prodigy
Season two of Star Trek: Prodigy dropped on Netflix on July 1st, and fans who've been waiting breathed a collective sigh of relief. Many of them had been responsible for Netflix acquiring the series after the unceremonious cancellation by Paramount +. And the results of their dedication brought them a season two worthy of the time invested. It was, by far, one of the best seasons of Star Trek, not just Prodigy itself. Now, though, anticipation is starting to build for what could be a third season of Prodigy...if only Netflix will order it.
And that's what Kate Mulgrew brought up at Star Trek: Prodigy's panel during Star Trek Universe at San Diego Comic Con. [via Trekmovie] She reminded the audience that they were responsible for season two because of the plane that had been hired to fly over Netflix's headquarters and asked the fans to get involved again.
"You guys [indicating the crowd] are responsible for season 2 because you hired that little plane that flew over Netflix and that got bought two weeks later, or something like that. So you have to do it again. Will you do it again?"
- Kate Mulgrew
Mulgrew admitted that she cried when watching the reunion between her character, Admiral Kate Janeway, and Robert Beltran's Captain Janeway, calling the creators of Prodigy, Kevin and Dan Hageman "genuises." Meanwhile, the brothers said they'd wanted to take the worst crew possible and turn them into the best crew, but that hasn't happened yet which is why season three has to happen.
Like the fans, the creative team behind Prodigy and the actors all want the animated series to continue, which Mulgrew says "there's no animated television like this." And she's right. Though Prodigy began with a team of ragtag juveniles absconding with the Protostar, it became a means by which to teach viewers who'd never seen a Star Trek series before. It has launched a network of committed viewers, dedicated fans, and through its journey to renewal at Netflix, essentially a posse who will lead the charge once again to set a course for season three.
