The first look teaser trailer for Section 31, starring Michelle Yeoh, dropped at SDCC, and while some fans thought it was wickedly good, there are plenty of others who are already claiming they won't watch the movie based upon the trailer alone.
The Star Trek franchise can't please everyone, but, for some fans, the team behind the franchise don't even seem to be trying. The trailer for Section 31 was criticized overall, but a big portion of fans had trouble with the soundtrack, which was a thumping rock beat instead of an orchestral like the other Star Trek movies.
In addition to their dislike of the trailer, fans are wondering why Section 31 could get made, but there still hasn't been a fourth movie in J.J. Abrams' Kelvin timeline. Other fans are calling it "simply awful" without explaining why they think so. Still more are comparing it to "Guardians of the Galaxy" and saying that Michelle Yeoh's talents will be wasted.
This movie could be a gamechanger for a lot of other Star Trek properties. If it succeeds, it could help usher in Star Trek: Legacy as well as a sequel movie to Section 31. However, if it doesn't succeed, then Paramount+ will take a monetary hit that could end up suspending further Star Trek productions until that cost is recouped...if it can be recouped.
Section 31 was written by Craig Sweeney who wrote the successful Star Trek: Discovery episode "Context is for Kings." The episode earned a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes and was lauded by critics. So even if the trailer wasn't what fans expected, perhaps they can still take into consideration who wrote the movie and give it a shot. The trailer itself barely shows a minute of clips that aren't connected so it's entirely possible this will be an excellent movie with a trailer no one liked. The question is: can fans look beyond what they already don't like to see what they may like?
