Losing Jadzia Dax was a crushing blow for the fans of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The character was an integral part of the story, had found love and happiness with Worf, and was Captain Sisko's best friend. How were they ever supposed to overcome this feeling of loss?
Leaving the series wasn't Terry Farrell's first choice. She wanted to stay and would have if she could have reduced her time on the show. But the producers made a different decision, and so, Jadzia Dax was killed by Gul Dakat, leaving behind a devastated Worf and Deep Space Nine crew. But even though Jadzia was gone, the producers decided to keep Dax and the connections to the other characters.
Enter Nicole de Boer who played Ezri Dax for the final season of Deep Space Nine, and though de Boer was happy to have a job, as she told Heavy, she understood how painful it was for the cast and crew to see her instead of Terry Farrell. But you never would have known the cast was experiencing that level of pain as they didn't take it out on de Boer. In fact, she said there was an "Immediate welcoming," because of who her character represented.
"“They have so much love for Jadzia, and I am, although a painful reminder for them as well, there is an immediate welcoming because of that factor. You know, because they miss her so and I’m a connection for them. So, that made it easier for me. And really interesting too… I’m not saying it was easy to do it. I’m saying this whole fact of coming into a show later, it was so nice to have that connection, the same thing Ezri was going through… I can draw on this.”"Nicole de Boer
de Boer didn't have an easy job when she came onto Deep Space Nine as she knew she was replacing a beloved character, and even though she found her own fan base, there remains a dedicated contingent of fans who still want to see Terry Farrell back as Jadzia Dax. Will that ever happen? Probably not, but there are plenty of other roles both Ferrell and de Boer could play in the Star Trek universe. It would even be fun to have them playing opposite each other. But we'd all prefer it be on some type of continuance of Deep Space Nine if that is at all possible.
