Robert Beltran hopes there'll be more of a chance to explore the Janeway/Chakotay relationship

Star Trek: Prodigy united Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran) onscreen beautifully, and though their relationship didn't take a turn for the romantic as many have hoped, it did set up something for the future. Of course, this all depends upon whether Prodigy gets renewed for another season (or even more.)

Beltran, in an interview with Screenrant, sees the potential in a relationship between the two, calling it "a beautiful lead up to something that could have been even more beautiful in the coming seasons. Three, four, five, six, or seven."

After so many years of being apart, it's no wonder the Prodigy team decided not to take the characters immediately into a romantic relationship. We haven't seen them onscreen in decades, and when they parted, they were colleagues and in a committed friendship. Of course their relationshp could have expanded over the years since we've seen them, but Prodigy showed that the pair share a strong bond that could be explored further if the animated series sees more seasons. And Beltran thinks the relationship between Janeway and Chakotay grew stronger at the end of season two.

"I fully expected for Prodigy to go three, four, five years, because I knew it was that good. And so, the way it ended, JC, our relationship ended in season 2, I thought was a beautiful lead up to something that could have been even more beautiful in the coming seasons. Three, four, five, six, or seven.

But I think that what was beautifully established was a respect and a love that could be platonic love, or it could be romantic love. But even at this point between the two series, they haven’t really had a chance to explore a personal relationship in a way where you can really give it time. The writers can take two or three or four episodes and explore maybe a marriage at the end of it, at the end of season seven of Prodigy.

Explore the relationship [and] the intimacy, which doesn’t have to be sexual, but just the attraction that they had for each other, at the very least an intellectual attraction. But of course, it was much more than that.

At the end of season 2, the relationship grew stronger, and something beautiful can happen in [seasons] three, four, five, and on, but I don’t know if that’ll ever be given a chance because of the nature of the business. But I hope so. I hope they will revive [Prodigy] for a few more seasons."

Robert Beltran

Beltran isn't the only one hoping Prodigy gets more seasons as even though the end of season two could serve as a series finale, too much has been left unexplored, the relationship between Admiral Janeway and Captain Chakotay being one. Even if the series takes its time bringing the couple together, a payoff at the end, like a marriage Beltran suggested, would definitely be worth the wait.

Prodigy debuted on Netflix on July 1st and has had strong viewing numbers, but we don't yet know if that will be enough to warrant a renewal from Netflix. If it does happen, then perhaps the Prodigy team will show Janeway/Chakotay's natural progression into a romantic relationship.
