Michelle Yeoh is back in the impressive role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou for the upcoming made-for-streaming Section 31 movie. During her time as the emperor aboard Discovery, Georgiou kept the sharp tongue and quest for domination before she was forced to leave because her body would not allow her to stay in the 32nd century. And, according to this teaser, which dropped at San Diego Comic Con and has also been uploaded to Paramount's Youtube channel, it looks like nothing has changed...except for the people she's working with this time around.
The trailer is full of flash and thumping music as it intersperses action scenes of Yeoh with the movie's other stars along with explosions and quips. There's dramatic lighting, snarky comments, and Yeoh looking especially sharp, and it begins with a "Misfit Content" warning that lets the viewer know there will be some "colorful metaphors," probably stronger than those Mr. Spock referenced in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
Then the first scene takes place in Georgiou's past as she recalls her younger self, played by Miku Martineau, growing up as part of the Terran Empire and accepting her place in it. It's going to be great getting a chance to see how Philippa Georgiou became a murdering Emperor as well as how she continually controls her thirst for violence.
The team behind the movie has done an outstanding job with special effects from the little that can be seen in the trailer. Honestly, it looks like a trailer for a major theatrical release which, sadly, isn't happening. The movie itself won't stream until some time next year, and that gives us plenty of time to actually accept that this is a Star Trek movie as it doesn't look like anything we've seen in the franchise before. There's never been a murderer playing the main character in a Star Trek movie before so this is bound to be an incredible redemption story...or maybe it'll be a way for Georgiou to control a different part of the universe.
