Star Trek: Discovery has failed to match Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in viewers
By Chad Porto
Star Trek: Discovery is heading out the door in a big way. The fifth and final season of Discovery is hitting the Top 10 of Nielsen streaming figures over their first few weeks, cracking into the Top 10 around episode 3 of their fifth and final season. For the week of April 22nd through the 28th, Discovery had 285 million streaming hours, good enough for 8th place in that given time span.
That's a nice solid number, and while it's gone up and down over the last few weeks, it looks like Discovery should remain in the Top 10 throughout its final season run. It joins Picard and Strange New Worlds as shows that broke into Nielsen's Top 10 streaming shows for a given week. Discovery is set to close out this week, but there are still likely five or so more weeks of ratings to keep an eye on after the series finishes up.
While it's good that the show has seen some upward success as it's closing down shop, it's still not holding the same figures as Strange New Worlds. Strange New Worlds had close to 400 million streaming hours as season two came to a close for them, though the series would drop by 100 million in the final week of the season.
At its peak, Discovery is a far cry from Strange New Worlds, but there is something to be noted. Despite the fact that Picard's final season has a lot of people unhappy, it's not only holding pace but at times lapping Picard's final season. Picard's second to last episode of the series netted them 276 million streaming hours, fewer than Discovery's current figures.
It goes to show you that quality and taste don't make for an exact representation of viewers. Discovery is clearly more popular than Picard, though Strange New Worlds is the top dog for a reason.
