It's fair to say the last few years have been rough for Star Trek fans. Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, and Prodiy were all canceled, with only Prodigy finding a second life elsewhere. Strange New Worlds was so impacted by the strikes of 2023 that the third season isn't expected until 2025, if not later. Plus we have no real movement on Star Trek 4 and the one film we do have some movement on is one no fan wants.

It's been rough, especially after all that was done for the franchise heading into 2023 and 2024. The sale to Skydance may give Star Trek a brand new injection of resources and if so, we can expect to see more from the franchise soon enough. Yet, when you factor in the financial struggles at Paramount Global, the failing of the streaming service Paramount+, the strikes, and just the state of the entertainment industry, it's fair to see why Star Trek had a down year from 2023 to 2024.

So we're not surprised that Star Trek only got nominated for two Emmys. Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks were each nominated for one of the awards. Strange New Worlds earned a nod for Outstanding Sound Editing For a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour) for the episode "Hegemony". Lower Decks meanwhile was nominated for the same award but for the Half-Hour variety. Their episode "The Inner Fight" earned the nomination.

Strange New Worlds will compete with Avatar: The Last Airbender, Fallout, Shogun, and 3 Body Problem, while Lower Decks will compete against Ahsoka, The Bear, Blue Eye Samurai, and Only Murders In The Building.

Last season Picard was the only show to get a nomination, matching this season's total with just two.

"Hegemony" and "The Inner Fight" served as their respective show's final and penultimate episodes of their respective seasons. Both episodes also prominently feature returning characters from the wider franchise, with a young Montgomery Scott debuting on Strange New Worlds, and former The Next Generation character Nick Locarno returning to the fold on Lower Decks.
