Star Trek fans are trying to get a beloved Deep Space Nine character a statue
By Chad Porto
Star Trek fans are some of the best in the world. They represent the best aspects of the franchise, keeping alive fandoms that are anywhere from two years to 60 years old, depending on the show or film. They are a marvelous bunch who do a great job making the men and women who play these characters feel larger than life.
One of the ways they do that is by immortalizing them. So far two of these individuals have been given the honor of having their likeness used in statues. The first was William Shatner's James Kirk being erected in Riverside, IA. The real-life city that would eventually see the fictitious birth of James T. Kirk.
Not long after that, another ceremony was held in Bloomington, IN. This time, for the wonderful Kathryn Janeway. While Shatner hasn't been too keen on his statue, Kate Mulgrew, the woman behind the captain that was Janeway, seems to thoroughly enjoy hers.
So this has had fans everywhere trying to get statues built for their favorite characters in their hometowns. We've heard talks of fans in France trying to get a Jean-Luc Picard statue built, while many would love to visit a Benjamin Sisko statue in New Orleans, LA.
The Irish, however, are not sitting this one out. According to Radio Kerry in Ireland, fans have compiled more than 600 signatures in an attempt to get a Chief Miles O'Brien statue built in Killarney. Killarney of course is the fictious home of O'Brien, who was played by Colm Meaney. It seems that the drive behind this one is being handled by Trek Culture's own Sean Ferrick.
Meaney and O'Brien don't share a birthplace, but Meaney's character would eventually move to Dublin, which is where the actor was raised.
We're hoping that Killarney gets the statue, as traveling and seeing every statue would be a wonderful life goal.
