Fans hate the trailer for Star Trek: Section 31. Sure, it'll have it's fans, but s many of the Star Trek community has come out hating the trailer for the new Michelle Yeoh led project. The trailer showed Sectiono 31, quintasential Star Trek villains, behaving in a way that would make you think of the Marvel Cinemative Universe series, Guardians of the Galaxy.
For sci-f (or SyFy) fans, it may also remind you of Kill Joys. The trailer was widely panned from the moment it dropped, earning well over 34k dislikes on YouTube as of July 30. There are only 4k likes on the video. The trailer stood as the first phase of Star Trek's new content strategy, focusing on streaming films over series. With the reception it's getting from the core fanbase that they're marketing to, it's very likely we know why the film is going straight to streaming.
Paramount execs can hide how bad the film does behind numbers he doesn't have to reveal. Which wouldn't be the case with a theatrical relese. Star Trek has not had the same impact on the zeitgeist as it used to have 20 years ago. It has next to no footprint in traditional markets when it comes to toys and collectables, and whatever merchandise it has is overpriced, made by lesser named sellers who don't have main stream channels of distripution.
So obviously it's fair to say that Star Trek, aside form Strange New Worlds, has struggled. The trailer for Section 31 is no different as fans have sounded off from all over the internet.

"So you made a Star Trek series but not for the actual audience that watches Star Trek."@oggy8983 via YouTube (452 likes)
"Ugh, Iβm usually much kinder than everyone else in the comments, but what is this?! Section 31 is supposed to be scenarios where I accidentally bump in to you, say sorry, and you die 2 minutes later. They are supposed to be the worst to protect the federation. I donβt know who they are making this for? This just makes me sad."@apok1980 via YouTube (482 like)
"Why do the current Star Trek handlers seem to think Section 31 is James Bond in space? There is even an episode of Deep Space 9 mocking that kind of concept."LittleJonnynelson via YouTube (674 likes
"Error 404: Trek not found"@dantheplasticman9742 via YT (370 likes
Fans on Twitter and X aren't even discussing it as much as past trailers, with many fans seemingly out on Star Trek as a whole at this point.
Then you have the fans on Reddit, who seem to think this film is everything wrong with Nu Trek.
"Chris Pine just had an interview where he said heβs tired of trek trying to get people who donβt like what they do to watch a show by alienating the people who DO like it andβ¦ man, is this ever exhibit A"TheSaltyStrangler
"The fact theyβre making this shows they missed the point of Section 31 in DS9"dreadful_name
"They're doubling down on the murder of millions. Not really sure you can ever bring a character back from that. Could you root for Pol Pot if he played it off as being sassy?"Temp89
"I like Star Trek BECAUSE it is utopian.kupfernikel
If I want dystopy, I can go for the other 100s of cool dystopic sci fi, that do dystopy way better than whatever this new trek is.
But Star Trek was the only Utopian vision that manage to not be boring."
"Wow, every last drop of cautious optimism I had just immediately evaporated. What in the actual hell was that?"APracticalGal
"Remember when the Star Trek universe was supposed to be a utopia representing humanity at its best? When it was a future worth aspiring to because you wanted to live in it?"xRolocker
"I'm about as easy to please as it gets when it comes to Star Trek. I enjoyed Discovery. I like Nemesis. I used to have the theme song to Enterprise on my MP3 player.silverlegend
But this...this might be the thing that finally crosses the line into the undiscovered country of Star Trek I just can't do"
Star Trek: Section 31 looked awful and nothing like a Star Trek film. It has a mountain to climb to come back from such a nasty response from the fandom.
