Star Trek: Lower Decks was met with some rough news in 2024 when it was announced that the series would see its fifth season also be its last. The sudden and abrupt cancelation came at a time when their parent company, Paramount Global, was facing monetary issues, as well as a sudden search for a buyer. Ultimately, the company did find a buyer, as Skydance is set to purchase controlling shares of the company.

That won't change the fate of the show, sadly. The series wasn't ever a big ratings draw and it was a show that divided the fandom significantly. Interest among the professional reviews waned dramatically after season one, with only a handful of people, who are fans of the show, still opting to review it. The series never caught on like many had hoped and its insincerity in a franchise that delves heavily into the human experience was met with a lot of negative backlash.

The sale won't save it. Not only is the sale not going to save it, but the crew is already finding other projects. Lead series star Tawny Newsome is moving on from Lower Decks already, being tied to a future live-action comedy project that will take place in the Star Trek universe. The series will truly be done with new episodes after season five.

That said, Star Trek: Lower Decks' cancelation didn't last long. Mike McMahon, the series creator, long envisioned Lower Decks as stretching past just a show and he's going to get his wish.

IDW and Star Trek announced a new comic at San Diego Comic-Con that will feature the crew of Lower Decks but in comic form. The book will be written by Ryan North and the first issue will be illustrated by Derek Charm. It will follow similar beats that the show did. It'll be episodic and will have a rotation of different artists working on each new book.

The book debuts right after the fifth season premiers. The show will debut on Oct. 24, 2024, while the book launches about three-ish weeks later on Nov. 13, 2024. Preorders close on Oct. 7, 2024.
