Star Trek: Prodigy fans take their request for a renewal to the skies over Netflix offices
After Star Trek: Prodigy was cancelled by Paramount+ in 2023, devoted fans were heartbroken. Determined to see the second season of the series, which was already in production, they began a campaign that would eventually lead to an aerial banner over the offices of Netflix in Hollywood. Now that the second season has aired on Netflix, there has been no mention of a season three renewal for the series so fans took it upon themselves to make sure the streaming giant understands their dedication.
On August 23rd, another banner flew over the Netflix offices with the words "RENEW STAR TREK PRODIGY! GO FAST!" Organized once again by UK-based fan Michele Stokes, the plane with the banner message made several loops over the offices in an hour-long journey. [via Trekmovie]
Kate Mulgrew expressed her appreciation for the fans' efforts in a post to Twitter/X, adding the hashtag #setacourseforseason3. Mulgrew reposted a video that Stokes had shared, which, as of this writing has over 90k views, of the plane making its rounds over Netflix.
A crowdfunding campaign was once again utilized to make this a reality, and dozens of fans contributed the necessary funds with the excess being donated to UNICEF. Trekmovie reached out to Stokes, and she offered up the reason behind the second aerial campaign.
"“We wanted to amplify the demand for this that exists on social media and within the fandom, and thought the best, most direct way was to repeat the stunt that helped push Netflix towards picking the series up in the first place.”"
- Michele Stokes
Series executive producer, Aaron Waltke, shared a video taken by fan Jessica Edmonds who was present and able to film the banner as it was flying over the offices. Waltke expressed gratitude to the fans' determination and love of the series and encouraged fans to keep watching.
Should Netflix renew Star Trek: Prodigy for a third season, the creators of the series, Dan and Kevin Hageman, have already said there could be as much as a three-year delay before fans will see more new Prodigy. But, as evidenced by this second campaign, Prodigy fans aren't going anywhere.
