Star Trek: Section 31 and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are going where people have gone before and quite often; the world of callbacks. Not quite nostalgia, but one can argue it's nostalgia adjacent. While people are getting burnt out on constantly being reminded of better times, and better projects, when you're in the position that Star Trek is in, callbacks and allusions to what came before is inevitable. Mostly.
For Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, they're going to be calling back to the Original Series in a big way with their upcoming third season. We're nearly a year away from it premiering so don't get too excited, but when the third season does drop, we're going to see Spock rocking a classic look.
In a still seen via TrekMovie.com, we see Spock wearing an environmental suit, which is a modernized version of the one Spock (Leonard Nimoy's version) wore in the Original Star Trek episode "The Naked Time". Or will wear, as it were.
That's not all, however, as Section 31 will apparently be giving a character first and only seen on Star Trek: The Next Generation, some depth of character. Kacey Rohl was cast for the film and thanks to Variety, we now know who she'll be playing. The outlet reports that Rohl will place a young Rachel Garrett,
Garrett, of course, was the captain of the USS Enterprise-C and died after her ship was sent forward in time when the Enterprise-D was active. The two ships met in the Next Generation episode "Yesterday's Enterprise". The Enterprise-C went forward in time causing then-deceased Tasha Yar to return to the land of the living, only for her to later go back in time with the Enterprise-C. A bold move, as the Enterprise-C was one of the few flagships of the Federation to be lost in battle.
The destruction of the Enterprise-C is one of the more brilliant stories that the Next Generation tackled, and the inclusion of her former captain in the film should give some weight to Garrett. Though, hopefully, they don't somehow muck up the story of the Enterprise-C by making it a part of the Section 31 film.
