Star Trek: Strange New Worlds wants to run into the Original Series, but should they?
By Chad Porto
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been a bonafide hit since its launch. The series is the new benchmark for all modern Trek series to be measured against and has done the best job objectively of balancing a new vision for the franchise while bringing along the older fans. As the older fans make up most of the fanbase, it's important not to forget them, as the creators of the show attempt to draw in newer fans, thus preserving the franchise for decades to come.
Yet, despite its success and critical achievements, Strange New Worlds isn't perfect. It does misstep occasionally, as all Star Trek shows tend to do. Yet, for the most part, it's a show that honors and respects established lore, far better than any other series.
So it was odd when series co-creator Akiva Goldsman recently said he intends to take the show into "TOS" territory. For those that don't know, Strange New Worlds is a prequel to the original Star Terk series of the 1960s, also dubbed The Original Series, or "TOS". Speaking to Collider, Goldsman made it clear he intends to go into the TOS Era.
""Left to our own devices, which really means if Paramount will, we’ll keep going into the TOS era. And we know how. That’s the hope, but as Henry said, nothing is assured. So we come from a conservative place with great aspirations.""
What does that mean, though? It's hard to say. The crux of the question centered around where the franchise was going and fellow series co-creator Henry Alonso Myers did talk about how he'd want the show to end. So Goldsman may be alluding to ending the series right where TOS started.
He may also mean pulling more and more ideas from the original series to tie the shows closer together. He may also mean that he intends on jumpstarting concepts established in TOS, as Strange New Worlds has done with the Gorn.
We're not sure how much this will affect the continuity of the series, but we're hoping it doesn't alter things drastically.
