Star Trek superfan turns his home into a starship dubbed Arcadia
Star Trek Day is on Sunday this year. It's the day of the year that Trek fans dedicated to the franchise celebrate in all sorts of ways, including wearing their favorite costume to work, adding to their Trek collections, playing a video game, or binge watching their favorite series. Some even choose to make a journey to Riverside, Iowa to see Captain James T. Kirk's birthplace. But others choose to celebrate all year long rather than just focus on a day. And one of those superfans is Jason Roach from Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Roach, who has been collecting Star Trek memorabilia for over forty years, appeared on Global News in a captain's uniform right out of Star Trek: The Next Generation to share some video footage of his impressive tribute to the franchise and talk about what got him into the world of Trek.
His home is outfitted with his own bridge, a lounge, and he can even take his system to Red Alert if necessary, which he demonstrated on the video. These are all systems Roach developed himself, and he can design pretty much what he wants for his starship.
As for what got the fan into collecting so avidly, he admits he'd been a fan of Star Trek long before he saw Star Trek: The Motion Picture, but at nine years old, as he watched what he calls "the twelve-minute beauty shot of the Enterprise," he was hooked. And that began his journey toward creating the starship of his dreams.
Retrofitting his home must have been a costly endeavor, but the Canadian can't say exactly how much he's paid out of pocket over the years as he says he's "been collecting before the Internet was a thing."
"I don’t even know how much I’ve got sunk into this. I’ve been collecting for 40 years. I was collecting before the internet was a thing. I was going through magazines at comic book shops that I was getting in the States and ordering stuff."
